A Call For Real Change

My heart is broken, and my mind is conflicted. I don’t ever want to see another mass school shooter massacre ever happen again. Of that, I’m certain we can all agree. Unlike the talking heads on tv and the masses online, I have zero interest in making this about politics. We need solutions that will help address the issues, not grandstanding or even bills aimed at winning votes rather than solving the problem.

Over 81 million people in the US own guns; 44% of all Americans live in a home with guns. There have only been 14 mass school shootings at K-12 schools since the 1970s. Given those numbers, it’s really hard to make an argument that it’s the accessibility that’s at issue here. It sounds like a commonsense move - guns are used to kill, so let’s eliminate guns, until you look at the numbers. I don’t know that you can really blame .000017% of anything for being the cause.

Since more than 99.9999% of gun owners have never had their gun used in a school massacre, the real question is what makes .000017% behave differently than the norm and use them in this way. There is also not one weapon that has been used at these attacks - many different types of firearms have been used as well as weapons besides firearms.

Mass school shooters are exactly who you think they would be. They are either current or former students of the school they attack. All shooters but one have been male. They were bullied & assaulted at the school they later attacked. They are described by others as being social outcasts, isolated, withdrawn, and angry. It’s never been the high school quarterback, the mathlete, or band geek, though the latter two are often bullied.

The public school day experience has been so ingrained into our society over the past 100 years that adults usually dismiss struggles students face in their day at school. School bullying is something kids are often left to handle on their own - which more often than not just means the child must endure being tormented and sometimes assaulted day after day for years. You know, wives have been known to get away with murder when they kill their abusive husbands. Yet we are surprised when children, with their underdeveloped problem solving skills and long-term thinking, prove to have been at risk for the same actions when they feel trapped by abusers.

It’s also worth noting that the children who are picked out by bullies are usually somewhat on the outskirts of the peer circles already, they usually are coming from a home that is disadvantaged already, they are often poorer kids, and kids with less family support. They are kids who are less likely to have the support resources to handle the situation and get the victim the needed mental health services they need to heal fully from the experience, not to mention the support needed to change their trajectory in some way so that they are not victimized again in the future.

This country has been sent a message loud and clear from these desperate and damaged perpetrators. Now I call on the adults to respond. We need to prevent children from growing up to be desperate and damaged by preventing abuse at home and at school. When students are bullied at school, they need to be removed from the situation. Ideally that would occur by removing the bully from the school premises, otherwise the bullied student should be moved for their own benefit and protection. Victims need to receive mental health counseling to help them deal with the experience of being bullied and the damage it has done.

More than just attending to the victims after they have been hurt, we need to work on teaching children not to be unkind. We need to work on promoting safe, healthy families so children don’t go to school with anger in their heart and a need to knock others down. We need to promote acceptance and support, and discourage exclusion and unkindness. Teach by example by reaching out to someone you know who might need a friend. Let your kids see you interact with people from all walks of life, expose them to people different from your family starting at a young age so they will respect others. We need to normalize standing up for others, including those you may not know. Let’s value standing up for truth and right regardless of what others think.

School Shootings - How Do We Stop Them?

We’ve had 18 mass school shootings (meaning 4 or more people were killed) from 1979 to June 1, 2022. If we want to figure out how to stop these events from occurring, we first need to look at what has happened. Simply focusing on the issue of banning a certain weapon is not going to get us there. By examining the past shootings that have happened we see that more than 62 different weapons have been used in these attacks. Attackers have used all kinds of different knives, fire, Molotov cocktails, and explosives in addition to 40 different firearms. Three shooters used an AR-15 rifle and three shooters used Glock 19 semi-automatic pistols.

What else can we learn by examining these past attacks? One thing I noticed is that only two shooters at most were not either current or former students of the school they attacked; the two being Brenda Spencer who shot people at Cleveland Elementary School in 1979 and the man who shot the kids at Robb Elementary School last week. These current and former students were outcasts and experienced bullying at school. Most shooters are 17 years old, but ages range from 11 - 43 years old.

Bullying used to be something you were expected to “suck it up, buttercup,” back in the day. However, now we know that it can and often does negatively impact all areas of a victim’s life. Unless they’ve worked through their trauma, bullying victims often harbor deep anger and resentment of the people who hurt them, and everyone who complicity stood by while it happened.

Online posts, blogs, and journals written by the perpetrator of these shootings usually paints the picture of an angry, isolated, outcast teen male with few friends, interests, or successes. All too often there were warnings before the attack - texts sent to friends, social media posts made showing weapons and sometimes a vague threat, lists or specific threats made by lonely, angry, socially in accepted young people.

I support some commonsense gun legislation, but I don’t think that laws will stop a law-breaker. If your intent is to commit multiple murders, laws are not going to deter or stop you. I don’t see a way to address this issue that doesn’t address the real root issue.

Below is a list of all the mass school shootings going back to 1979. Take a look and tell me what observations you’ve made while reading these synopses.

Homeschooling & Socialization: What Does Socialization Look Like

More and more parents are discussing their educational options and considering homeschooling. A common concern expressed, often by dads or grandparents, is, “What about socialization?” They worry that if the kids don’t attend public school how will they learn to get along with other people? Will they make friends? Will he grow up to be a lonely, awkward, with no friends and no chance of getting a date? Will she be able to relate to peers in college and the work place?

Homeschooling does not mean living as a shut-in. It doesn’t mean all learning happens at home, either. “Homeschooling” is more accurately “parent-led  education.” Instead of needing to
sign an NDA just to see your child’s homework, parents decide what is taught to their children, who will teach them, when they will study which subjects, what  performance expectations are used, and what teaching methods are used.

Homeschoolers use an ever-growing variety of resources to educate their children. They can buy a complete curriculum for any given subject, including textbooks, workbooks, tests, test answers, and even a daily assignment schedule for the entire year. Many come with video options, some even have live online classes with either a teacher or an expert in a particular area teaching the class and answering student questions, even grading assignments. They can buy one subject or all of the subjects. They can buy a complete full year curriculum from one publisher or piece it together from different publishers for different subjects. They can enroll their children in parent-taught co-op classes or even public-school-district-sponsored parent-partnership programs (PPPs).

PPPs are a way for school districts to retain some of the federal funding they would have otherwise lost when a student homeschools instead of attending public school. Parents can choose from different levels of support ranging from supplying curriculum at no-cost to the family, to programs involving limited on-campus attendance, with curriculum and assignments given by a public school teacher.

In many states homeschoolers have the right to access to any service or class offered to full time student, so a student can take just science on campus and then take all other classes at home. Homeschoolers can play on the high school football game or receive any offered therapy services. They are even eligible for free school lunches if they would otherwise qualify.

What does all of this mean? It means your homeschooler will have all kinds of opportunities to meet and develop friendships with their peers. Moreover, they learn not only how to socialize with people of their same age like public school students, but rather homeschoolers are generally comfortable with kids much younger than themselves as well as adults of any age. Homeschoolers look out for the little kid who can’t reach the swings by himself as well as comfortably enjoy a visit with grandparents or elders at church. They aren’t oblivious to the needs of others; they are going to shake an adult’s hand and look him in the eye, speak clearly and listen to what is said.

Parent-led education pulls in experiences and resources from friends, family, and all kinds of public resources. Over the course of their childhood they likely will interact with adults in a range of professions, attend hands-on learning events and camps, they will learn from older children, adults, and sometimes even younger children. They will reinforce their learning by teaching it to their sibling or a younger friend. They will learn that education doesn’t end at 3:00pm, doesn’t happen only on a weekday nor only in a particular building. They grow up with much wider perspectives and richer experiences rather than just what can be provided by worksheets & textbooks while sitting at a desk for eight hours a day.

Just some of the experiences my kids have participated in so far during our homeschooling journey: soccer; dance; gymnastics; violin; guitar; drums; bass; farming; goat raising & milking, as well cheese-making; vegetable farming; science camp; Camp Invention; worship band; choir; speech; team policy debate; parliamentary debate; Lincoln-Douglas debate; theater; apologetics; financial basics and essentials; Shakespeare; Latin; Spanish; Korean; theater lighting; theater sound; theater set-building;  video filming; video production; photography; video visual effects; photographic visual effects; nature camp; poetry & literature camp; debate camp; speech camp; Bible camp; tours of everything from a US Navy air craft carrier to Krispy Kreme; many different children’s museums; science museums; and so much more!

Some of the co-op classes they have taken are: Art Journaling; Hands-on Science; Nutrition; Mexican Cuisine; High School Writing; Writing & Rhetoric studies on Fables, Narratives, Proverbs, Cheria, Refutation & Confirmation, Encomium & Vituperation,  Description, Impersonation, and Thesis; State History; What’s in the Bible; Digital Art; Terrific Triangles; Let’s Learn About Sports; Good Knight Stories; Historical Conquest; Musicals; Yearbook; Newsletter; Shakespeare; Roman Life; Latin; Spanish; Chess; Math Fun; Multiplication; Sewing; Fun with Chocolate; Financial Foundations; Bible Writing; US History; Lewis & Clark; World Geography; Bible Art Journaling; Art; Crochet; Quilting; American History with American Girl Dolls; Basic Cooking; and many, many more!

Who needs CSE with the predators in our public schools

Without anything more than a simple Google search, I easily found over SIXTY headlines from our nation’s schools about school children being assaulted. Some headlines I wish I had never read, some articles will haunt me for a long time.

It’s happening every day, in red states and in blue states, in cities and in rural schools, in fancy schools and poorer schools. Don’t believe me? Just check out the list below.

And the list keeps growing! Every time I refresh my search, there are new headlines - more children traumatized in what’s supposed to be a safe learning environment, more predators using their positions as educators to scar their precious students, more parents questioning what they could have done differently.

4.5 million students are sexually assaulted by a school employee!

4.5 million

4, 500, 000 children

4, 500, 000 children in the United States

4, 500, 000 children in the United States under our watch!

Now let me guess, you are bothered by these statistics but it is different where you live, right? I mean, the teachers at your child's school are really good. In fact, your child's teacher has won several awards. Besides, you aren't worried. You know her teacher - he's a nice man who is married and has his own kids.

Did you know that...

- almost all educator-student predators are heterosexual?

- most are married or living in a heterosexual relationship?

- educators who prey on elementary through middle school children are often considered exceptional teachers, earning a disproportionate number of awards compared to their non-predator counterparts?

I'll bet you did not know that.

Wait, I know what you are going to say.

"That is awful! But once these teachers are discovered, there teaching careers must be over, right? If something like that was going on at my school, I would know."

A study of 225 cases of educator sexual abuse in New York showed that:

100% of the accused admitted to physical sexual abuse of a student

0 were reported to authorities

2 lost their teaching license

34 were terminated

45 only received a formal reprimand or suspension

56 teachers admitted to physically sexually abusing a student and received no consequence

88 chose to leave the district - most with good recommendations and their retirement packages intact

Superintendents reported that 14 of these teachers who admitted to physically sexually abusing a student were teaching in a different school district!

Applying those statistics to the general population would mean that the educators responsible for sexually abusing 280,080 of our children are known to be teaching in a different area!

Pack 4 NFL football stadiums full of school children who have been physically sexually abused by a teacher and tell them all that their predator teacher is still being paid to teach children!

Marinade on that for a moment.

"Yeah, but that's New York - it's a whole different world there. But where I live..."

In a report from Washington state, of 159 coaches fired for sexual abuse of a student, 98 of them were re-employed as a youth coach. That's over 60%!

Are you outraged yet?

I live in a rather rural area of Washington state. Statistically, just within my local school district, 500 students will be sexually abused by a school employee.

500 children in our small town community!

I look at my list of Facebook friends and realize that it is likely that the child of approximately 80 of them will be sexually abused at school by a school employee.

It is highly likely that your child won't be his predators first victim, and that even if you report it that teacher will not receive any negative consequence.
